Huntington Becoming a Haven for Winning

Huntington Becoming a Haven for Winning

By Michael Morgan

The Marshall Thundering Herd football team moved to 2-0 on the season with a 32-16 win over the Eastern Kentucky University Colonels. The Herd’s success on the football field was preceded by huge success on the basketball court this past season.

The Jon Elmore-led Herd finished with a 24-10 regular season record in the 2017-2018 season. Elmore led the team in assists per game, steals per game, minutes per game, and led the team and Conference USA in points per game. Longtime supporter Rick Ellison is a huge fan of Elmore. “I swear there isn’t a thing that Elmore can’t do. He can rebound, shoot, and lead the floor as well as anyone in the country,” Ellison said.

Can the Herd Repeat as Conference Champs?

The Marshall University Men’s basketball team looks to remain at the top of the conference and hold off the Middle-Tennessee Blue Raiders and the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers.

The Herd compiled a 25-11 overall record last season with a 12-6 conference record. Considering their record on paper, they may not have been expected to be the team to upset Wichita State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament this past March.

Last season’s success leaves a question to fans and spectators alike, “What is in store for this season?”

The Herd opens up their 2018 season with an away game against Eastern Kentucky University, then returning home against Hofstra. Their strong play at home a season ago (14-2 record) may give the impression that there will be the same success at home this season.

Fans’ Excitement for the Herd

The Marshall University men’s basketball team is coming off its second straight 20-plus-win  season and its first trip to the NCAA Tournament in 33 years.  Expectations for the upcoming 2018-19 season could not be higher.

Longtime Marshall fan Brandon Bowman has high hopes for the Herd this season. “After winning Conference-USA and then making the tournament last year, I bet they go even further this year!” said Bowman.

The Herd returns four starters, including star point guard Jon Elmore and shooting guard CJ Burks who look to improve their draft stock for the next NBA season.

Center Adjin Penava left to pursue a career in the NBA.  Marshall student Taylor Perry says that she will miss the Conference USA leading shot-blocker...

Grayson Allen is a Disgrace

I decided to give more of an opinion on this article than the previous one. I believe Grayson Allen needs to be suspended indefinitely. It has been clear seeing the way he acts on the court as well as off the court, that he is a head-case. After a THIRD instance of Allen tripping an opponent on the court, Coach Krzyzewski has no other options. When a player is trying to harm other players while on the court, he needs to be disciplined.

In Duke’s 72-61 point win against Elon, Allen tripped after fouling Elon player Steven Santa Ana. Allen received a technical foul and began complaining incessantly on the bench after learning that he received the technical.

Coach K. later set up a meeting for himself, Allen, Ana, and Elon’s coach...
